In 26 B.C.E., Judas Ben-Har (Charleston Heston) is a wealthy Jewish prince and businessman in Jerusalem, who lives with his mother Mary (Martha Scott); his sister, Tirzah (Kathy Odonnell); and his female servant Amara (Stella Vitleschi). The faithful slave of the family, businessman Simonids (Sam Zaff), pays a visit with his daughter, Esther (Haya Harare). Judas and Esther fell in love at first sight, but he betrays the other. Judah’s childhood friend, Roman citizen Mesala (Stephen Boyd), is now a Tribune. After living several years away from Jerusalem, Mesala returns as the new commander of Roman Garrison, the fort’s antonia. While Mesala believes in the glory of Rome and its royal power, Judas is dedicated to his faith and freedom of the Jewish people. This difference causes tension between friends, and the result of their split after an ultimatum was issued by Mesala that Judah distributes potential rebels among the Roman authorities.

Loose tiles fall from the roof of Juda’s house during the parade of Jude’s new governor Valerius Grattus (Mino Doro). The gratus is thrown from his spoofed horse and almost killed. Although Mesala knows it was an accident, he condemns the abuses to Judah and inprisons Mary and Tirza because of his residual anger over Judah for refusing to help. By punishing a known friend and prominent citizen, he hopes to scare the Jewish population. Judah vowed to avenge Messla. As he and other slaves were being taken to the streets, they stopped at Nazareth to water the Roman horses. Frustrated by thirst, Judas begs for water, but the commander of the Roman detachment refused him. He collapses, but is resurrected when Jesus Nazareth (cloud heater) gives him water. After three years as a galice slave, Judas has been assigned to the head of Roman Consul Quintus Arias (Jack Hawkins), who has been accused of destroying a Macedonian pirates fleet. Arias praised Judas’s determination and self-discipline, and offered to train him as a gladiator or sarthi. Judah rejected the proposal, declaring that God would help him in search of vengeance. When the Roman fleet confronts the Messidonan, Arias orders all troublemakers, except Judas, to chain their crew. Arias’ galley crumbles and sinks, but Judas removes the other routers and saves Arias. In despair, Arias wrongly believes that the fight ended in defeat and tried to atone the Romans by falling with his sword, but Judas stopped him. They are rescued and credited with the roman fleet’s victory to Arias. Arias successfully petitioned Emperor Tiberius (George Ralph) to liberate Judah and adopted him as his son.
