Movie Plot: A widow whose land and life are in danger as the railroad is getting closer and closer to taking them over. A mysterious harmonica player joins forces with a desperado to protect the woman and her land.
The film depicts two conflicts that surround Flagstone, a fictional city in the American Old West: a land battle related to the construction of a railroad, and a mission of vengeance against a cold-blooded assassin. A struggle for freshwater exists, a piece of land in the desert outside Flagstone which is the only other water source of the area. The land was purchased by Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), who claims that the railroad will have to pass through that area to provide water for steam engines. When the crippled railroad tycoon Morton (Gabriel Ferretti) finds this, he sends his mercenary gun to Frank (Henry Fonda) to intimidate McBain, but Frank instead kills McKinnon and his three children, putting evidence to frame the bandit Cheyenne (Jason Robards). Meanwhile, former prostitute Jill (Claudia Cardinal) arrives at Flagstone from New Orleans, revealing that she is McBain’s new wife and therefore owns the land.
