In 1937, a soldier at a military facility is being celebrated through two-sided mirror smoking marijuana and in his recipe shows what he hates about the military. A high-ranking official closes the project and makes marijuana illegal.Seventy years later, in 2007, Dale Denton (Seth Rosen) goes to meet his drug dealer, Saul Silver (James Franco), to buy marijuana, a process server. Saul says he can get to know Dale’s next customer, Ted Jones (Gary Cole). Dale witness Ted and a police officer, Carol Breezier, shot a man at Ted’s home. While fleeing, Dale gave up his Roan Pineapple Express, a rare strain of marijuana. Ted identifies the tension and sends his henchmen Budlofsky (Kevin Corrigan) and Matheson (Craig Robinson) to a dealer in Red (Danny McBride), who tells them about Saul.
Back in Saul’s apartment, Dale found out that Ted is a drug lord and could detect Roach. Dale and Saul visit The Reds, who tells ted who they are and intend to kill them. Dale and Saul decide that they will have to leave the city.
They sell the Pineapple Express to increase bus fares, but Dale was arrested by police officer Barber (Cleo King). Dale tells Barber that he saw the murders of Brezzier and Ted. Barber had long been skeptical about Brezzier’s corruption and says he would investigate, but Saul thought it was brace driving, hijacking the police car. Delier heard Dale’s arrest on police radio and chased Dale and Saul. Dale and Saul argue and get separated. Saul is kidnapped and held in the dugout of Ted under a barn, which is the same military facility since 1937. Dale helped the Reds save Saul. Redback at the last moment and Dale is caught. While Dale and Saul are waiting to be killed, they make a reconciliation and plan to escape.
